News from Dukeries Community Band
A great start to 2024 (April 2024)
We have had a great start to 2024 with two concerts that have each raised over £1000 for local and international charities.
Please have a listen to us live and unedited.
We really love it when our audiences sing along.
A big thank you from the band (January 2024)
December was a very busy time for the band with seven performances over a three week period. If you saw us at any of our performances we hope you thoroughly enjoyed the music.
We would particularly like to thank Ollerton Town council and Revd Richard Hanford for their support of the band during December.
Firstly we are most grateful to Ollerton Town Council for supplying us with music stand lights. These have already proved most useful when we played at the Ollerton Lights switch on.
Secondly, a massive thank you to Revd Richard Hanford for letting us use St Paulinus Church to stage a charity concert. Our concert raised £280 from ticket sales, with all monies going to The CAR Project as we were able to use the church for free. The CAR Project supports local people who are in food crisis.
Lastly, here is a photo of the band tree on display at the Christmas Tree Festival in St Paulinus Church. We were delighted to take part in the festival alongside many other trees from a wide range of local clubs and organisations.
We wish everyone a great 2024 and we look forward at welcoming you at our performances during the year.
The Dukeries Community Band - more brass players needed (January 2024)
The Dukeries Community Band wishes everyone a happy and successful 2024.
We had a very busy December with several performances in and around Ollerton. Hopefully you had an opportunity to come and listen to us playing.
So what's in store for us now? Well, we will be rehearsing pieces for performances during 2024.
We are a community wind band comprising brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. We don’t audition, much to my relief, as otherwise I would not have considered joining! New players are welcome to come down to any of our rehearsals to join in straight away or just to listen. We are always happy to have new players, of any age, to join us. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, or have started to learn fairly recently. All we ask is that you can read music, want to improve, can attend rehearsals and are able to play in our concerts.
We would especially welcome more brass players i.e. trumpet/cornet, euphonium/baritone, French horn, trombone and tuba/bass players. Our talented and versatile saxophone players cover some of these brass parts extremely well, but it would be good to have the “real thing”. However, if you are a woodwind player and are interested in joining us, we would also love to hear from you at dukeriescommband@btinternet.com.
We rehearse each Tuesday during term time at the Dukeries Academy, New Ollerton from 7 pm to 9 pm. Our ever-increasing repertoire features pop to classical with lots in between, so there is plenty for everyone to enjoy
Our concerts support the local community and charities. We are always happy to hear from organisations who would like us to play for them.

The Dukeries Community Band - Christmas concert, Saturday 9th December 2023
We are holding a Christmas themed concert on Saturday, 9th December, commencing 7pm at The Church of St Paulinus, Church Circle, Ollerton, NG22 9SZ. Entry on the door is £5 (age 13 and over). Age 12 and under are free entry.
The Dukeries Community Band will be playing a selection of popular Christmas pieces and carols. Audience participation with singing is voluntary but will definitely be encouraged.
Also featured in the concert are the Retford Tootlers, an accomplished recorder group who play in six part harmony. You will see and hear recorders you’ve possibly never come across before.

The Dukeries Community Band - come and join the band (October 2023)
We are a community wind band comprising of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. New players are welcome to come down to any of our rehearsals to join in straight away (we don't audition) or just to listen. We are always happy to have new players, of any age, to join us. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, or have started to learn fairly recently, although you must be able to read music.
We particularly need more brass players. Our wonderful saxophone players do a fantastic job playing parts that should be played by brass instruments. However, it would be so nice to have the music played by the correct instruments. So if you play trumpet/cornet, trombone, euphonium, baritone horn, French horn or tuba and think you would enjoy playing in a band, please come down and try us out.
We rehearse each Tuesday during term time at the Dukeries Academy, New Ollerton from 7 pm to 9 pm. Our ever-increasing repertoire features pop to classical with lots in between, so there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.

Charity Concert - May 19th 2023
We are delighted to say that our concert raised £510. With match funding it means that Nottinghamshire Mind received a whopping £1020.
A big thank you to everyone who came along and supported the concert
and to everyone who donated raffle prizes.
Also, a big thank you to St Paulinus' Church who let us have the venue for free.

The Dukeries Community Band – dust off your brass instruments! (March 2023)
Does the thought of playing in a band excite or terrify you? It doesn’t matter which answer you give to this question, The Dukeries Community Band could be the place for you to grow your musical skills and enjoy yourself at the same time.

Our Musical Director Ray Jones has a most impressive musical background. His extensive musical experience has come from serving 37 years in the Army and in more recent times working with Belper Town Wind Band, where he continues as their Musical Director. Ray is highly enthusiastic, has a great sense of humour and certainly knows how to motivate us throughout our rehearsals. So, it’s not actually scary at all, it is exciting! The two hour rehearsal always goes far too quickly for my liking.
We would especially welcome more brass players i.e. trumpet/cornet, euphonium/baritone, French horn and trombone players. Our talented and versatile saxophone players cover some of these brass parts extremely well, but it would be good to have the “real thing”. We are also seeking flute players and percussionists in particular (we have a full drum kit available), so if you’re interested in joining us, we would love to hear from you at dukeriescommband@btinternet.com.

Exciting times for the Dukeries Community Band (February 2023)
Since starting the Dukeries Community Band some 38 years ago Malcolm Bevan has been very much at the forefront in continuing to drive the band forwards. Many of these years have been spent with Malcom leading the band as Musical Director. Well, Malcolm has decided to take a step back from directing and take a very well deserved rest. Huge thanks to Malcolm for everything he has done for the band over the years. Our new Musical Director is Ray Jones. Ray has over 20 years of conducting experience. His enthusiasm ,and sense of humour, is already proving to be a winner amongst band members.
Just because Malcolm is no longer in charge of the baton it doesn’t mean we won’t see him. He is likely to turn up with his cornet any time soon. We so hope he does.
As we are a Community band we are always happy to have new players, of any age, to join us. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, or have started to learn fairly recently. All we ask is that you can read music, want to improve, can attend rehearsals and are able to play in our concerts.
